North Arlington honors its war dead and veterans through a memorial that names local World War heroes and pays tribute to those who served in World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and Desert Shield and Desert Storm. The World War II veterans are honored for fighting for the freedom of America and the free world in the Pacific and European theaters, on the beaches of Normandy, in the deserts of North Africa, and on the islands of the South Pacific, showing the uncommon valor praised by Admiral Nimitz. Korean War veterans are remembered for fighting at Heartbreak Ridge and Inchon, enduring harsh winters and summer heat, often while greatly outnumbered, and giving their lives for freedom, justice, and peace. Vietnam veterans are remembered as young people who went to war, lost their youthful dreams and in some cases their lives, returned with the horrors of war instilled in them, and did not always receive the recognition they deserved. An honor roll also records North Arlington service members who served during Desert Shield and Desert Storm.
