McAllen Nature Center is a 20-acre city-operated preserve on the west side of McAllen, Texas, created in 1962 as the McAllen Botanical Gardens with an emphasis on palms. Though still presented as a garden, it has shifted away from its earlier botanical role toward protecting native habitat. The site now serves chiefly as a natural preserve, with three-quarters of a mile of trails through pristine native thornscrub, a distinctive South Texas landscape. Its importance lies in safeguarding a patch of nature within the city while also supporting birding and offering picnic areas for simple recreation.
