On the east side of Old Main, the fifth debate between Abraham Lincoln and Stephen A. Douglas was held on October 7, 1858. The building was restored and rededicated during the Knox College centenary in 1937. It was rededicated to youth as a symbol of the permanence of Knox College and of its faith in the future.
