Taft Point in Yosemite National Park, west of Glacier Point, is a dramatic overlook above Yosemite Valley known for wide views of Yosemite Falls and El Capitan and for deep granite fissures opening abruptly over the valley floor. It is named for President William Howard Taft, who reportedly encountered the spot during a three-day Yosemite visit in October 1909 hosted by John Muir, when a planned horseback outing became a hike. Reached today by a short trail from Glacier Point Road, the overlook is also associated with the 2015 deaths of Dean Potter and Graham Hunt during an attempted proximity wingsuit flight, underscoring the site’s beauty and danger.
