The Golden Hind, feared by Spaniards in the Pacific, had an oak hull about 80 feet long, a maximum breadth of 23 feet, and a draft of 13 feet. Her 18 cannons fired 6-pound shot, outgunning every Spanish ship in the Pacific. She carried about 60 officers and men on her nearly 3-year voyage around the world at an average speed of about 3 knots. On June 17, 1579, she entered Drakes Bay, now part of Point Reyes National Seashore. Ballasted with 26 tons of silver from Upper Peru, including some coined into one-ounce Pieces of Eight, she anchored in a little cove on the west side of the entrance to Drakes Estero, where the bluffs and hills remain visible though the sand spit and island shift over time. Queen Elizabeth's share of Drake's treasure enabled her to retire her debt and strengthen her fleet, while Drake's share helped secure the knighthood he received after returning to England.
