Opened in 2016 in San Rafael, California, this non-profit museum presents political art and artifacts from more than 25 countries to show how governments, dictators, and organized interests used propaganda across the 20th century. Its collection, assembled over about 30 years by Tom and Lilka Areton, grew from their personal ties to socialist Czechoslovakia, the Soviet Union, and life under Nazi and Communist systems, as well as their acquisitions after communism’s collapse in Eastern Europe. Organized by themes rather than country, the exhibits explore leader worship, fear, nationalism, model citizens, enemies, military power, and the afterlives of political symbols after 1989.
