Rough Mountain Wilderness is a federally designated wilderness area in Virginia within the Warm Springs Ranger District of the George Washington and Jefferson National Forests. Covering 9,300 acres on Rough Mountain, it rises from about 1,150 feet to 2,842 feet at Griffin Knob across steep slopes and a long ridgeline. The area is hard to reach and has little infrastructure, with only the Crane Trail inside its boundaries. Limited water, few level campsites, blocked access at one end, and complicated approaches from the other keep visitation light. Its importance lies chiefly in its isolation, which has preserved an unusually quiet and remote part of the national forest.
