Keweenaw Underwater Preserve protects Lake Superior waters off Michigan’s Keweenaw Peninsula, where storms and difficult navigation made Keweenaw Point a notorious trap for vessels. Shipwrecks from the 1800s lie near Eagle River, Eagle Harbor, and Copper Harbor, many preserved in shallow water though damaged over time by ice and storms. These remains now serve as important dive sites. Notable wrecks include the Mesquite, a former United States Coast Guard cutter lost in 1989, and the larger freighter William C. Moreland, which grounded in 1910. The preserve is significant for safeguarding and interpreting a concentrated landscape of Great Lakes maritime history.
