Black Creek Nature Sanctuary is a 242-acre protected area on the Lake Superior shore in Keweenaw County, Michigan, preserving shoreline, wetlands, dunes, and forest habitats. Local citizens began acquiring land in 1991 to prevent development, assembling 241 acres by 1992, and a 2006 addition along the lakeshore brought it to its present size. Managed by the Michigan Nature Association, the sanctuary includes beaver ponds, white birch-lined sand dunes, mixed conifers, lowland hardwoods, and about 1,500 feet of shoreline. A trail of more than two miles passes blueberry, trailing arbutus, orchids, and other wildflowers before reaching a lagoon where Hill Creek and Black Creek enter Lake Superior. Hill Creek also passes through stamp sand left from copper processing in the 1860s.
