A railroad once brought summertime visitors from Washington, D.C., to Chesapeake Beach along the route now followed by the concrete path and paved walkway through the woods. The line crossed Fishing Creek at this location and continued along the railroad bed ahead. Active from 1900 until 1935, it carried visitors to the train station in Chesapeake Beach, now the Chesapeake Beach Railway Museum. A 1941 photo shows the trestle crossing Fishing Creek, and the remains of the original railroad trestle pilings can still be seen below the timber walkway over the creek.
