Beacon Hill in Branford is a small but prominent traprock summit on the Connecticut shore at the southern end of the Metacomet Ridge. Rising steeply above surrounding marshland near the Farm River and Long Island Sound, it is formed of basalt created as the continent began rifting near the end of the Triassic Period, then tilted by faulting and earthquakes. Its cliffs, ravines, and talus create uncommon microclimates and plant communities in Connecticut. Valued for scenic views and quiet recreation, it is crossed by trails including the Branford Trail, and its ridge, marsh, and shoreline habitats have been protected through local and state conservation efforts.
