J. Manning purchased original town Lot 48 from the Commissioners of Perryville for $67.12 in 1830. On October 2, 1899, Esther and Issac Kampe Kaempfe sold part of this lot to Vincent L. Prevallet for $2,100, and the building was likely constructed shortly thereafter. Prevallet opened a jewelry store there and lived upstairs, later moving the store next door to the Shoults Blechle Building, where it remained until closing in 1971. His jewelry business had begun in 1895 and at different times operated on all four sides of the town square. In 1926, Louis Hecht, owner of Hecht's Ladies Store on Main Street in Cape Girardeau, opened a branch there with Mrs. Oswald Bergman as manager. In 1927, the Sweet Shop, also from Cape Girardeau, opened there under Charles Sepinza, selling homemade candies, ice cream, soft drinks, and fruit, with a player piano for entertainment. Other tenants included the Famous Shoe Store, Myer Drug Store, and Manning Drug Store. Ron Horr took over Manning's in 1972 and operated Perryville Prescription there until 2000, when the Brewer Law Firm purchased the property and Daniel's Clock Shop moved upstairs. After Dennis Brewer became a judge, the law practice was sold and Edward Jones Investments moved in. Ritter Real Estate, LLC, is the current owner, and the building still bears the Prevallet name as a reminder of downtown Perryville's heritage.
