Leslie County was created in 1878 from Clay, Harlan, and Perry counties. It was named for Preston H. Leslie, Governor of Kentucky from 1871 to 1875. He later served as Montana Territorial Governor from 1887 to 1889 and as U.S. District Attorney from 1894 to 1898 after appointment by President Cleveland. He died in 1907 and was buried in Montana.
