King Range Wilderness is a 42,585-acre protected section of northern California’s Lost Coast, where steep, unstable mountains rise from the Pacific so abruptly that major highways were routed inland. Established in 2006 within the King Range National Conservation Area, it includes one of the longest undeveloped shorelines in the United States outside Alaska and supports varied habitats from old-growth Douglas-fir and coastal prairie to dunes, estuaries, and nearshore marine waters. Its long human history reaches from Indigenous settlement to ranching, farming, and heavy twentieth-century logging, while later conservation and restoration efforts helped preserve a landscape known for dramatic terrain, heavy rainfall, rich wildlife, and the rugged Lost Coast Trail.
