King Peak is the highest point on California’s Lost Coast, rising in Humboldt County within one of the state’s most isolated coastal mountain landscapes. As the summit that helps define the region’s rugged relief and character, it holds a prominent place in far northern California geography. The mountain was named for a captain in the United States Army. Its recorded name changed over time: maps from 1886 used King’s Peak, a 1949 map showed King Peak, and later maps returned to King’s Peak. Today, the mountain is commonly known as King Peak.
