Frozen Head State Park spans about 24,000 acres in Tennessee’s Crab Orchard Mountains and preserves some of the highest land in the state west of the Blue Ridge. Long part of Cherokee hunting grounds, the area later passed to the United States, then saw prison, coal-mining, and logging use before Governor Hill McAlister set much of it aside as Morgan State Forest in 1933. After a 1952 forest fire, the land eventually became a state park, with most acreage gaining natural area protection in 1988. Today it is known for rugged peaks, waterfalls, mature forest, expansive views, remote trails, and the Barkley Marathons.
