Matapeake State Park on Kent Island occupies a former ferry landing that once connected Maryland’s western shore across the Chesapeake Bay before the Bay Bridge transformed travel. After the state acquired the ferry company in 1941, the Sandy Point-Matapeake route operated here until 1952. When ferry service ended, the property was reused for other purposes before Queen Anne’s County renovated the old terminal and reopened it in 2009 as the Matapeake Clubhouse beside a public beach. Today the restored ferry house, former landing turned fishing pier, trails, and shoreline amenities preserve this site as a visible link to the bay’s earlier ferry era.
