Sandy Point Shoal Light is a three-story brick lighthouse on a caisson foundation in the Chesapeake Bay off Maryland, built in 1883 to replace an 1857 light on Sandy Point after officials determined the shoal required a better-equipped offshore station. Its illumination evolved from oil wicks to incandescent oil vapor in 1913 and electricity in 1929, with changes in its light pattern as technology advanced. After automation in 1963, the prominent and accessible structure suffered vandalism, including destruction of its original lens in 1979. Despite restoration efforts, deterioration continued; it was listed on the National Register in 2002, sold privately in 2006, and its light was discontinued in 2019.
