Hiram Mott and his family, emigrants from Canada, are buried here. Hiram’s son Isreal Mott built a house a few yards east of this spot in July 1852. His wife Eliza was the first white woman settler in Nevada, and their child Louisa was the first white child born in Nevada in that building. Nevada’s first school was held there in 1854, and the first court in the Utah Territory or Carson Valley was also held in that building. The Motts were among the pioneers, ranchers, millers, and first settlers who planted civilization in the desert, organized emigrants into communities, and threw around them the protection of the law.
