Charlotte County covers 496 square miles. It was formed in 1764 from Lunenburg and was named for Queen Charlotte, wife of King George III. Patrick Henry and John Randolph of Roanoke lived in this county, and Henry is buried here. Prince Edward County covers 356 square miles. It was formed in 1753 from Amelia and was named for Prince Edward, son of Frederick, Prince of Wales, and younger brother of King George III. General Joseph E. Johnston was born in this county, and Hampden-Sydney College is in it.
