The Wardle farm began as an 80-acre parcel worked by Isaac John Wardle Jr., who leased it from W. Henry Wallace of Salt Lake City, and in the early 1900s Johnny Wardle farmed alfalfa, barley, and later sugar beets on land made difficult by rocks pushed up each winter by frost. The farm was cut in half by the Utah Salt Lake Canal near 3200 West and by the Orem-Bamberger Railroad Line, which carried local sugar beets to the factory in West Jordan. During the drought of the 1930s, when many farmers lost or abandoned their land, Johnny kept the farm going with irrigation water from the High Line canal. After Johnny died in 1936, his son Charles Wyman Wardle, his wife Orel Ann, and their family took over and improved the farm, adding another 80 acres to make 160 acres and regrading the land, raising it by as much as 6 feet on the north so irrigation water could run from west to east rather than north to south. Although civil engineers said this would not work, the change succeeded and the farm became very successful. The farm supported not only the Wardle family but also other Riverton and Bluffdale families, including the Crane, Hatch, and Hobbs families, through work provided by Charlie Wardle, and the Wardle children continued helping with harvests even after taking other jobs. In 1947, Charlie's son Harold moved his family to the farm and lived in a white two-room house with electricity and a coal-burning cook stove but no plumbing. In the late 1950s, after Charlie contracted skin cancer, the farm had to be sold to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Through the Wardle family's labor, it became one of the highest-producing farms in the county. Salt Lake County bought the property in 2008, groundbreaking for the park took place on October 10, 2014, and Wardle Fields Regional Park opened in spring 2017 on 80 acres in Bluffdale City.
