Cuyamaca Peak
Nature
1
Cuyamaca Peak, in the Cuyamaca Mountains within Cuyamaca Rancho State Park, rises 6,512 feet and is the second-highest point in San Diego County. Its position near the Pacific gives it sweeping views across the coast, mountains, desert, and ranges extending into Mexico, making it a popular hiking destination. Moist Pacific air also shapes its climate, bringing most precipitation in autumn and winter, with snow common above 5,000 feet. The peak and surrounding park were heavily damaged by the Cedar Fire in October 2003, but rapid regrowth soon followed, making the mountain a clear example of wildfire recovery and fire ecology.
