The Rough and Ready Tavern, also known as the Old Bagley House, stood here and at different times served as a residence, tavern, general store, arsenal, and probably the headquarters of Gen. Hardee on Aug. 30, 1864. The people of Atlanta were evacuated to this place for further transport south, and it was mentioned in “Gone With The Wind.” At Rough and Ready Station on the Macon & Western R.R. stood a water tank and wood shed for the engines. Federal troops cut the railroad 1 mile below here on Aug. 31, 1864, completing the isolation of Atlanta. The tavern was torn down in 1917, and timbers from it serve as sills in the nearby McBrayer house.
