On September 11, 2001, terrorists hijacked four airliners and carried out attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City and the Pentagon, while United Airlines Flight 93 crashed in Pennsylvania after passengers confronted the hijackers; thousands of passengers, crew, military personnel, civilians, firefighters, law enforcement officers, and rescuers were killed, and the attacks brought shock, grief, and a sense that America had changed forever. In the aftermath, rescue and recovery workers continued searching through the rubble, Americans across the country responded with prayer, donations, blood drives, flags, and renewed unity, and the courage of passengers, emergency personnel, and service members was honored as an expression of sacrifice, love, and resolve against terrorism. In Anthony, Kansas, the community responded by supporting the family of New York firefighter Joseph P. Spor, Jr., who died rescuing others at the World Trade Center, building lasting ties with his family and with firefighters at Ladder 38 and Engine 88 in the Bronx, and receiving three steel beams from the collapsed World Trade Center as symbols of that bond and of remembrance for the heroes of September 11.
