Henry Thomas Family

The Henry Thomas family became the first permanent white settlers in Bureau County when they located here on May 5, 1828. Colonel Zachary Taylor, later President of the U.S., and Jefferson Davis lodged here while en route to Galena on the Peoria Galena State Road at the beginning of the Black Hawk War. This was also the site of Fort Thomas and of the first post office in Bureau County.
