Red Covered Bridge spans Big Bureau Creek north of Princeton, Illinois, and is a rare survivor among the state's covered bridges. Built in 1863 at a cost of $3,148.57, its 149-foot wooden span once carried travelers along the Peoria–Galena Trail. Recognized for its historic importance, it was placed on the National Register of Historic Places on April 23, 1975. The bridge stayed open to traffic into the 21st century despite modern safety concerns, but vehicle incidents highlighted its vulnerability. After minor damage from a GPS-routed truck in 2021, a semi tractor-trailer severely damaged the structure in November 2023, leading to its indefinite closure.
