Big Run State Park is a public recreation area in western Maryland at the north end of the Savage River Reservoir within Savage River State Forest. Centered at the meeting of Monroe Run and Big Run, it grew from a smaller Civilian Conservation Corps recreation area established in the 1930s and was later expanded after creation of the reservoir. Its Appalachian Plateau setting, with wooded uplands, a canyon reservoir, shifting weather, and native hardwood forest, supports a wide range of wildlife and seasonal wildflowers. Today the park serves as an outdoor base for boating, fishing, hiking, camping, picnicking, and trail access, including winter recreation in the surrounding forest.
