New Germany State Park is a 508-acre recreation area in Garrett County, Maryland, beside Savage River State Forest, where a lake and many facilities grew from earlier practical uses of the landscape. John and Charles Swauger first dammed Poplar Lick Run to power a sawmill and grist mill. In the 1930s, the Civilian Conservation Corps replaced that dam, enlarged the lake to 13 acres, planted trees, maintained forest roads, and built cabins, shelters, a bathhouse, gazebo, recreation hall, officers’ quarters, and slopes for Maryland’s first ski resort. The park still reflects that New Deal-era work through its historic structures and year-round recreation.
