Greenwood Plantation, located off Old Agency Road, was built in 1854 by Colonel William F. Battley, Sr. (1813-1871), a wealthy planter who moved to Madison County from North Carolina to establish a cotton plantation. Like many planters, he was a slave owner and, according to records, owned fifty enslaved people in 1850. During the Civil War, Colonel Battley served in a unit of Mississippi State Troops, and the family fled the house and plantation in 1863. The Greenwood Plantation home survived the Civil War and remained in Battley family ownership until 1929. William F. Battley (1882-1939), Colonel W. F. Battley's grandson, was the last member of the Battley family to live at Greenwood Plantation. He and his wife Blanche DeVelling Battley sold the house and acreage in 1929. W. F. Battley was elected Mayor in 1929, while his wife Blanche once served as Ridgeland's Postmaster. Mr. and Mrs. Richard Redmont purchased Greenwood in 1941. The Redmont family owned the home until 2000, when the home was purchased by the Mark S. Jordan Companies to be the centerpiece of the Greenwood Plantation residential development.
