The stately homes in the 500 block of South Pittsburgh Street reflect Connellsville’s wealth in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The Doctor Echard House, built in 1888, and the Southside Hospital, built in 1909, reflect an unusual combination of home and work. The Edward K. Dick House was the home of a man who served on the board of both the Title and Trust Company of Western Pennsylvania and the Colonial National Bank. The Byron Porter House was the home of Connellsville’s first photographer, who established his business in 1869 and also served on Connellsville Council. The Alexander P. Morton House was built by the owner of Connellsville’s first jewelry store; Morton was a native of Scotland and served a seven-year apprenticeship to learn his craft. The Porter S. Newmyer House was built in 1893 for an active community member who was first vice president of the First National Bank, owned the Newmyer Opera House, served as a Connellsville councilman, and sat on the Executive Committee of the 1906 Centennial Association.
