In Marshall County, war reached many places during the Civil War. On July 28-29, 1862, Guntersville was shelled and burned by Union artillery, cavalry, and infantry, and skirmishes occurred at Fearn's, Law's, Matthew's Landings, and Ft. Deposit. On May 1, 1862, the Sand Mountain Cavalry Battle involved CSA Gen. Forrest and Union Col. Streight. On August 24, 1863, a skirmish took place between Ft. Deposit and Gunters Landing. On December 27, 1863, the Buck Island Massacre occurred. On March 2, 1864, Guntersville was attacked and captured by Union infantry. On March 14, 1864, at Claysville, the Home Guard defeated and captured a Union infantry company. On April 13, 1864, Guntersville was shelled by a Union gunboat and attacked by Union infantry. On May 22, 1864, a skirmish occurred at Town Creek. On May 26-27, 1864, Union forces moved through Marshall County enroute to Atlanta. On October 25, 1864, Gen. Hood's 38,000-man CSA army camped in Brown Valley enroute to Tennessee. On January 14, 1865, skirmishing occurred at Beard's Bluff and Ft. Deposit, and on January 15, 1865, Guntersville was burned by marines from Union gunboats.
