Lamar was established in 1838 and named for Mirabeau B. Lamar, who lived from 1798 to 1859 and served as President of the Republic of Texas from 1838 to 1841. It was made a Port of Entry in 1839, was sacked by Union troops on Feb. 11, 1864, and survived until 1914 but never flourished.
