Kūkaniloko Birth Site
History
1
Kūkaniloko on Oʻahu’s central Wahiawā Plateau was one of the island’s most important ancient cultural places and was regarded as its geographic piko. From as early as 1100 to the mid-1600s, it served as a ceremonial birth site for high-ranking aliʻi, where chiefly women gave birth in the presence of the father and 35 other chiefs, with sacred drums announcing the event. The 36 stones are linked to those witnesses. Closely tied to Oʻahu’s political and sacred history, the site symbolized legitimacy, ancestry, and leadership, and may also have been used to observe the sun for calendrical purposes. It remains a protected yet vulnerable place.
