Wahiawa Botanical Garden occupies a twenty-seven-acre high plateau in central Oʻahu between the Waiʻanae and Koʻolau ranges. Part of the Honolulu Botanical Gardens, it is especially suited to tropical plants that thrive in a relatively cool environment and gives particular attention to native Hawaiian species. The site began in the 1920s as Hawaiian Sugar Planters' Association land leased for experimental tree planting, and many large trees remain from that era. Transferred to the City of Honolulu in 1950 and opened as a botanical garden in 1957, it combines mature trees with collections of native and other tropical plants, making it a valued showcase of Hawaiian and tropical flora.
