During the American Revolution, General Thaddeus Kosciuszko assisted in directing modifications to the fort at Billingsport, and in the fall of 1777 those defenses prevented the British Navy from entering Philadelphia. This was the first engineering assignment Kosciuszko received from the Continental Congress.
