Fallingwater, in Pennsylvania’s Laurel Highlands, is Frank Lloyd Wright’s celebrated weekend house for Liliane and Edgar J. Kaufmann Sr., designed so the family would live directly above Bear Run’s waterfall rather than simply view it. Developed from a site with earlier country club and employee-retreat uses, the house emerged after the Kaufmanns bought the property in 1933 and hired Wright in 1934, with Edgar Kaufmann Jr. helping unite architect and clients. Built of stone, concrete, steel, and glass, its cantilevered terraces echo the stream’s rock ledges. Despite early structural troubles, it became an architectural landmark, later preserved through major repairs and recognized nationally and internationally.
