Caballo Lake State Park lies on the Rio Grande in New Mexico, about 16 miles south of Truth or Consequences. It centers on Caballo Lake, a reservoir formed in the 1930s by the construction of Caballo Dam across the river. The dam stands 96 feet high and extends 4,558 feet across. Although the lake’s size varies seasonally, at full pool it covers more than 11,500 acres and stretches 18 miles, making it New Mexico’s third largest lake. The park is especially known for fishing, particularly for bass and walleye, and for the broad reservoir landscape created by this major river dam.
