From April 5 to May 2, 1862, the battery was part of the Confederate defense line of Gen. Magruder spanning the Peninsula. Manned by the Halifax Light Artillery, it fired on Union troops of Gen. McClellan occupying the east bank of the Warwick River. Though greatly outnumbered, the defenders delayed the Union Army for a month, enabling Gen. Lee to prepare the defense of Richmond.
