First Camp after Discovery of San Francisco Bay
San Bruno, California
History
2
On November 4, 1769, Captain Gaspar de Portola's expedition crossed Sweeny Ridge and saw the Bay of San Francisco for the first time. That night the party camped at a small lagoon now covered by San Andreas Lake. Believing the bay was too large to go around and that they had passed Monterey Bay, the expedition camped here again on November 12, 1769, while returning to San Diego.
