A prehistoric road crossed the Llano Estacado from Gholson Spring, seven miles east of present-day Slaton, to Tahoka Lake, three miles south of Wilson, then to Tobacco Creek, Big Spring, and the North Concho, and it was discovered and used by Indians, Spaniards, United States Army units, and cattle drovers. Many seventeenth-century Spanish travelers passed here, including Father Salas, who came from New Mexico in 1629 in response to pleas from Jumano Indians to preach to them; Captains Hernan Martin and Diego del Castillo, who explored in 1650; and Captain Diego de Guadalajara, who sought pearls and other treasure in 1654.
