Since 1913, organized baseball has been played at Cameron Field, named for Rev. Lewis Cameron. On October 29, 1929, baseball legends Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig played an exhibition game there. More than 12,000 spectators paid $1 each to squeeze into the grandstands and watch Ruth and Gehrig help South Orange defeat New Brunswick, 7-6. Together they hit three home runs, including one by Gehrig that cleared the railroad tracks and hit a house on Vose Avenue. Cameron Field was also a frequent stop for African American teams in the Negro Leagues, and Josh Gibson is said to have played there.
