South Mountain Recreation Complex is a 36-acre recreation area in the South Mountain Reservation in West Orange, New Jersey, operated within the Essex County Park System. Developed beginning in 2010 around the Orange Reservoir, it combines Turtle Back Zoo, the Richard J. Codey Arena, miniature golf, a treetop adventure course, boating, a playground, a restaurant, and a walking loop into a single family-oriented leisure destination. Its expansion unfolded in phases from 2010 to 2011 and sparked debate over public spending and restaurant management, while later boating and trail improvements were delayed until Essex County secured a lease agreement with the City of Orange through 2032.
