The Lauren Rogers Museum of Art in Laurel, Mississippi, opened on May 1, 1923, as the state’s first art museum and grew from a memorial created after Lauren Rogers died in 1921. Founded through the Eastman Memorial Foundation and housed in a Georgian Revival building on the site where his home had been planned, it developed from a combined museum and library into a major cultural institution through expansions in 1925, 1983, and 2013. Its collections became especially strong in American and European painting, Native American basketry, Japanese prints, and British Georgian silver, while its library and exhibitions have supported art, education, and regional history.
