Christians have worshipped and served Christ on this corner since 1737, when Turkey Christian Church built a log meeting house on the property. Over the next two years, 19 acres of land were deeded to the congregation, the church affiliated with the Presbyterian Church, and a new meeting house was built. During a Sunday worship service in 1748, the church balcony collapsed onto the people below, but no one was seriously injured, and the congregation saw God's providential care in their protection. In honor of that event, local leaders of Turkey renamed the town New Providence in 1750. The outline of the front of the current sanctuary, completed in 1834, was added to the town seal, and the church continues its work of serving Christ there and around the world.
