In downtown Santa Rosa, the Museum of Sonoma County unites regional history, contemporary art, and outdoor sculpture across a campus centered on the restored 1910 Santa Rosa Post Office and Federal Building, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Built after the 1906 earthquake disrupted plans for a permanent post office, the structure opened in 1910 with notable modern systems and strong local craftsmanship. Threatened with demolition after the 1969 earthquake, it was saved in 1979 by being moved more than 750 feet to Seventh Street and restored for museum use. Over time, the institution expanded its art holdings, facilities, and mission into a broader cultural center.
