Aroostook County Historical and Art Museum
History
1
Founded in 1937, the Aroostook County Historical and Art Museum in Houlton, Maine, is housed in the White Memorial Building, a 1903 Colonial Revival home with a history shaped by repeated fires and later recognized on the National Register of Historic Places. The museum grew from local historical efforts and moved into the donated house after first renting exhibit space elsewhere. Its collections focus on Houlton and Aroostook County, preserving materials on local education, military history from the Aroostook War to the Korean War, domestic life, regional photography, and Camp Houlton, the World War II prisoner-of-war camp. The building itself remains an important historic artifact.
