Prince's Bay Light, officially the John Cardinal O’Connor Light, stands on an eighty-five-foot bluff above Raritan Bay on Staten Island's southern shore, where the terminal moraine of the Wisconsin Glacier forms the highest point along that coastline. Built in 1864 with a brownstone keeper’s cottage completed in 1868, it served navigation until its deactivation in August 1922 after acetylene lights in the bay made it unnecessary. The Mission of the Immaculate Virgin later acquired the property, and it eventually became part of the Mount Loretto Unique Area. The cottage now houses a state forest ranger police officer, and the lighthouse and cottage became New York City Landmarks in 2016.
