Marion's original city plat was completed in 1839 and set aside a square block in the center of town as a park. Known as City Square Park, it remained the center of activity in Marion through many changes over the years. At first the park was fenced to keep out livestock, but citizens came there to hear music as early as the first roofed platform built in 1871. In 1886, Harry Smith organized a brass band to give concerts in the park, and their growing popularity led to construction of a permanent covered bandstand at the north end of the block for continuing performances. The park also drew generations of Marion's children with a popcorn stand that, beginning in the late nineteenth century, attracted adults and children alike by selling peanuts, popcorn, bubble gum, and similar treats, especially on band concert days.
