About six miles northeast of Baker City, Oregon, atop Flagstaff Hill, this center anchors the story of the Oregon Trail in the landscape of eastern Oregon. Opened in May 1992 after planning that began in 1987, and returned to full-time operation on March 1, 2001, after a major structural retrofit, it combines indoor exhibits, multimedia presentations, living history demonstrations, special events, and more than four miles of interpretive trails. Its scope reaches beyond the pioneer journey to include natural history, Native Americans, early travelers and explorers, pioneer life, federal land agencies, and the mining and settlement of northeast Oregon.
