Wagons and cattle of the Great Migration, led by Marcus Whitman in 1843, descended September 25 into Lone Pine valley. After nearly a month of travel over the hot dry Snake river plains from Fort Hall near Pocatello, Idaho, the cool climate and lush grass in the later-named Baker Valley provided a rest for all. The trail route then turned north, ascending Ladd Pass to Grande Ronde valley and the Blue Mountains.
